COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofit Young and Established hosted its annual winter coat giveaway in Evansville today, distributing 400 to 500 coats along with snacks and handmade hats; volunteers + local businesses supported the event and extra coats will later be donated to schools.  14 News
  • Local businesses are partnering & hosting the Hoosier Natty Contest that offers one Evansville winner a pair of tickets to see the Hoosiers compete in a national championship game in Miami. The contest runs Monday, Jan. 12 to Thursday, Jan. 15 and the winner will be drawn Thursday night.  44 News
  • Gov. Mike Braun and local leaders celebrated the ribbon cutting of The District Phase II in Princeton, which added 110 workforce apartments near Toyota Motor Manufacturing today. A $3 million READI 2.0 investment unlocked more than $14 million from private funds and local partners.  44 News
  • Tonight, the 56th annual MLK Scholarship Memorial Service featured singing, prayer and a guest speaker while Evansville Baptist Ministers and Deacons Alliance awarded a scholarship to a deserving student. The group will host its 7th Annual Scholarship Banquet at Old National Events Plaza on Jan. 17.  14 News
  • Easterseals’ Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights raised a record $239K at Garvin Park from Nov. 27 through Jan. 1 as more than 12,700 vehicles helped fund local early education and therapy services.  Courier & Press
  • Young and Established will host its annual winter coat giveaway Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at 1308 Vann Avenue to provide a limited number of coats for local youth on a first-come & first-served basis.  14 News

  • CenterPoint Energy is urging residents in southwestern Indiana to use its Resource Hub for bill assistance & energy-saving tips as more cold weather is forecast, allowing customers to enroll in Budget Billing and set up flexible payment plans before usage increases.  44 News

  • Julie Hagerty and Robert Hays, stars of 'Airplane!', will host a screening and Q-and-A at the Victory Theatre this spring on May 14, with tickets starting around $45 and on sale Friday (announcement by Megan Smith).  Courier & Press
  • Bulls, Bands, and Barrels returned to Ford Center on Friday as fans enjoyed bull riding, barrel racing and live music. Organizers announced upcoming shows in Huntington on Jan. 17 and Lexington on Feb. 14.  14 News

  • Evansville’s Victory Theatre hosted EPD’s semi-annual Promotion and Awards Ceremony on Monday to honor officers, including Sam Taylor who returned from rehab in Atlanta and received the Gold Merit Award.  14 News
  • Emergency services personnel are invited to an open house at the EFD Administration Building on Jan. 20 at 10 a.m., Jan. 24 at 9 a.m., or Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. to learn about the new city-run ambulance service that starts July 1 (RSVP not required).  Courier & Press

  • Data from Realtor.com showed that October home sales in Vanderburgh County had a median price of $217,732 (up 1.9% from September) as single-family homes increased by 3.5% and townhomes dropped 5.1%, while overall sales were down 4.1% from last year.  Courier & Press

  • Silver Creek earned all 17 first-place votes in Class 3A on Jan. 12 while Kouts regained the top spot in Class 1A in the USA Today Network poll — Fishers and Oak Hill held leads in Classes 4A and 2A, marking a midseason shift in Indiana high school boys basketball.  Courier & Press
