COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feed Evansville provided essential supplies to local warming centers yesterday as freezing temperatures persisted, with volunteers distributing food, winter gear, and rock salt to residents at locations like United Caring Services + other facilities. Back roads remain slick despite cleared main thoroughfares.  44 News
  • Lilly Endowment renewed its support for Sacred Places Indiana today with a $10M grant to help restore historic houses of worship. Congregations can apply for planning grants up to $25,000 plus capital grants up to $500,000 until June 15 and join a free webinar on Feb. 19 for more details.  Courier & Press
  • Evansville emergency shelters have expanded services amid freezing temperatures, with United Caring Services now allowing families to shelter together while offering free meals at UCS, Rescue Mission, and Ozanam. Officials ask volunteers to remove snow + first responders help people access safe shelter.  44 News
  • Local fire crews ask residents to clear snow around fire hydrants to help emergency responders during the heavy snowfall (residents should only clear hydrants if it is safe). The request is made as snowdrifts may delay critical response times.  44 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilco, a Grammy-award winning rock and country band, will perform its first Evansville show at Aiken Theatre on April 24. Tickets start at $49.50 with sales beginning Friday after Old National Events Plaza announced the event.  Courier & Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from tri state schools earned prizes in the Symphony of Color Art Contest, where their art inspired by Haydn's 'The Clock' was shown at the Victory Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 17. The Evansville Philharmonic hosted the contest (for grades 1 to 5) to spark classical music interest.  Courier & Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Last weekend's winter storm dropped 12.5 inches of snow on Evansville, making it one of the city's snowiest events in recent memory. National Weather Service records show the storm nearly matched past events such as a 22.3-inch storm in Dec-2004 and a 12.2-inch storm in Feb-1998.  Courier & Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Evansville Vanderburgh Commission on Homelessness will conduct the Region 12 Point-in-Time Count today at 12:00 p.m. until 12:00 p.m. tomorrow — gathering vital data on homelessness for HUD funding and local planning.  44 News
  • Indiana lawmakers advanced HB 1086 (which allows school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments as a protected document) after an 8-3 vote by the House education committee on Jan. 27; the full chamber will review the measure next.  Courier & Press

  • Washington High School boys basketball coach Bo Burkhart resigned effective immediately for personal reasons, leaving the team 5-9 with eight games remaining; interim coach Brandt Schuckman will take charge as Washington Community Schools announced the change (Jan. 27).  Courier & Press
