COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Posey Co. mom has traveled to Los Angeles to support a social media addiction trial involving Big Tech execs + tech companies must answer for their algorithms after her teen son died during a choking challenge.  14 News
  • Evansville firefighters practiced dive training today at the Deaconess Aquatic Center (Waterman-Ship Test) to build endurance, speed, and strength for water rescues as part of their routine emergency response training.  14 News
  • Crews are working to fix a water main break in the eastbound lanes of the Lloyd Expressway near Wabash Avenue (causing some traffic delays) while vehicles continue moving with backups.  14 News
  • Aurora’s outreach team completed the annual point-in-time count of Evansville’s homeless population on Jan. 28 and Jan. 29, handing out surveys plus warm items and snack bags at various spots. The effort collected crucial data to support local community services.  Courier & Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Disney On Ice 'Jump In!' runs at the Ford Center from today through February 1. The live show features over 50 characters from classic tales and new appearances from Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 (today's performance times include 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.).  44 News
  • USI International Club and the Center for International Programs will host the annual International Food Expo on Friday, Feb. 13 at Carter Hall, where attendees can savor global dishes and enjoy cultural performances and a traditional fashion show.  44 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, 37 Ivy Tech staff participated in mental health training to help them respond to students in crisis — funded by a grant from Circle of Ivy Philanthropy. The session included practice tools and video scenarios so staff can better recognize mental health needs.  14 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Evansville Fire Department warned residents to stay off frozen lakes and ponds today, noting that inconsistent cold weather prevents safe ice formation (typically only 5 inches would support a small group) and advising anyone witnessing a fall to call 911 immediately.  14 News
  • Evansville water crews worked Thursday morning to repair 15 water main breaks caused by freezing weather that led to multiple boil-water advisories (7 are active) and advise residents to report leaks and stay cautious around icy patches.  14 News
  • Crews in Evansville are now moving to clear residential streets — after nearly finishing primary roads during a heavy snow event that began Saturday afternoon, they are working through over 700 calls using extra salt and sand while asking residents for patience.  14 News
  • Ohio Township Firefighters took advantage of freezing weather in Newburgh to practice cold water rescue techniques and posted training photos online + urged residents to call 911 and avoid walking on the ice.  14 News
