COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A high-energy luncheon called Game On for Hearts takes place today at Bally's Event Center in Evansville to raise funds for AED equipment & feature local figures dressed as game characters. Doors open at 11 a.m. with the program running from noon to 1 p.m.  14 News
  • Tri-State Food Bank will host four drive-through food distributions in February, offering free boxes of shelf-stable groceries and fresh produce. The events in Evansville at Carriage House Apartments on Feb. 9 and Feb. 24, at Bosse Field on Feb. 20, and in Mounds at City Hall on Feb. 18 will run until noon or while supplies last.  44 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • O’Bryan Barrel Company apologized on Monday, Feb. 2 after an accidental release of mercaptan odor during drum cleaning at its Evansville plant. Employees quickly halted cleaning and IDEM visited the site, ruling out safety concerns.  44 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Evansville’s Human Relations Commission selected 10 local leaders for a downtown banner project honoring Black History Month throughout February. The project highlights honorees for their impact in leadership + service and advocacy.  44 News
  • A photo look back shows January key moments in Evansville from snowy sidewalks plus school sports games and quiet city council meetings that captured the winter mood. The images reveal community life across local neighborhoods.  Courier & Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ivy Tech Evansville received a $192,105 grant from United Way of Southwestern Indiana today to boost work-based learning and job-training programs. The funds support certifications in construction, IT and cybersecurity *including a partnership with Habitat for Humanity* aimed at helping low-income residents.  Courier & Press
  • Today at Carver Community Center, Mayor Terry and local partners launched a new reading initiative that gives 13 books to kindergartners through third graders; the initiative is supported by the school corporation, the public library, Mattingly Charities, and the YMCA (the mayor plans monthly reading sessions to promote literacy).  14 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Though city crews cleared main roads after the snowfall, many Evansville sidewalks remain snow & ice covered, forcing pedestrians closer to traffic. Residents must clear sidewalks near their homes per local ordinance 12.05.170 to avoid fines, city officials said.  44 News
  • Former Congressman Lee Hamilton, an Evansville native known for his longtime service and local basketball legacy at Central, died Tuesday, Feb. 3 at his Bloomington home. He represented Indiana’s 9th District for 34 years & is survived by three children and several grandchildren.  44 News
  • Evansville law enforcement and local partners are leading a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Training for 47 officers this week to boost responses during mental health crisis calls (the program focuses on communication and de-escalation techniques).  44 News
  • Evansville Water and Sewer Utility announced that the intersection at 9th Avenue will be closed to through traffic for road work on Ohio Street starting today and lasting about 30 days weather permitting. Drivers should follow road closed and detour signs at Wabash and Fulton Avenue.  14 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare completed its first year as a certified community behavioral health clinic in Evansville, boosting access to care by 42% and increasing crisis calls from 400 to 6,000. The center partnered with local law enforcement & plans to expand services for more residents.  14 News
