COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pike Animal Welfare Shelter will host a speed-matching event with adoptable pets on March 7 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the 4H Building at Hernady Park—attendees can meet animals, donate, and enjoy special adoption rates.  14 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ford Center opens its doors at 6 p.m. on Thursday for Winter Jam with artists including Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, and Katy Nichole taking the stage at 7 p.m.—attendees pay a $15 donation at the door for entry.  14 News
  • Drums on the Ohio, a Drum Corps International event, is set to return on July 22 at the renovated Reitz Bowl at 350 N. Dreier Blvd — gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. It will feature eight top drum and bugle corps.  Courier & Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North High School principal John Skinner will retire in June after 33 years with EVSC and praises his school’s high academics + state-winning sports and arts programs, along with the opening of a new $85.8 million facility.  Courier & Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Evansville Area Plan Commission unanimously voted to deny a rezoning request for a Posey County company to build a septic disposal facility near Skylane Airport on Thursday amid community concerns of flood risks. The decision now goes to the Vanderburgh County Board for final review on Feb. 24.  14 News
  • Indiana senators passed a resolution on Thursday to rename a stretch of SR-237 near Perry County Memorial Hospital as the Sergeant Heather Glenn Memorial Highway — honoring her service and sacrifice.  14 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Area Plan Commission approved converting St. Paul’s United Church of Christ into 62 affordable apartments at West Michigan Street and 12th Avenue on Thursday. Residents raised tree-saving and safety concerns while a developer said the structure will remain unchanged — keeping its footprint.  14 News
  • New Realtor.com data shows that in November the median home price in Vanderburgh County dropped to $202,487 (an 8.1% decline from October) while recorded transactions fell to 284, though prices are 16.7% higher than last November.  Courier & Press
