COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the McCutchanville Fire Department hosts the annual Jeremy Tighe Chili Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to honor the late firefighter by offering chili for $30 per gallon and $15 per half gallon + challenge coins, patches and t-shirts at its station.  14 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today and tomorrow, Wesselman Woods is hosting its 48th Annual Maple Sugarbush Festival and Pancake Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds support the woods, and tickets are sold at the door with limited seating (weather dependent).  14 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • USI officials say the new Center for Applied Business Technologies at the Romain College of Business will finish construction by summer to offer accounting and finance hubs along with a biometric discovery lab for team projects and to build a local talent pipeline in support of the new manufacturing campus nearby.  14 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daylight saving time begins Sunday, Mar. 8 at 2 a.m. in Evansville + local bars may extend alcohol hours until 4 a.m. to help adjust for the lost hour.  Courier & Press
  • Residents on Oakhill Road have suffered years of neglect with streets filled with trash, broken glass and abandoned homes, prompting Mayor Stephanie Terry to visit and pledge cleanup. City crews will begin work Monday at 8 a.m. while residents remain determined to care for their neighborhood — a community effort.  44 News
  • The Vanderburgh County Highway Department closed several local roads until further notice as the Ohio River is predicted to crest at 36.6 feet on Wed., Mar. 11. Motorists are urged to avoid standing water — officials will update when roads are safe to reopen.  44 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New Realtor.com data shows that home prices in Vanderburgh County fell by 6.7% in December, with the median sale dropping to $182,833 from $196,059 in November. Single-family home prices decreased slightly while condominiums and townhomes saw a sharper drop.  Courier & Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Evansville Otters are seeking an outgoing team player to serve as the mascot 'Evan or Eva the Otter' in Evansville. Applicants (16+ years) must be ready to entertain crowds at games.  14 News
  • Evansville men's basketball lost 68-59 to Northern Iowa on March 5 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis in the first round of the MVC Tournament. Coach David Ragland said injuries and turnovers, along with a late UNI run, ended the season with a 7-25 record.  Courier & Press
  • At the IHSAA boys basketball sectional semifinals on Friday, March 6, Castle upset North with a 50 to 43 overtime win — Connor Richards’ return after knee surgery sparked a rally. Harrison advanced with a 48 to 39 win over Reitz as defense set up a shot at a third championship.  Courier & Press
  • University of Southern Indiana women's basketball lost to Lindenwood, 82 to 79 in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday, March 6 at Ford Center. USI led early but fell behind late despite a strong performance from Ali Saunders (30 points, 14 assists).  Courier & Press
