COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Evansville Salvation Army hosts a gardening skills class once or twice a month during its food service program where participants learn planting techniques and receive a free meal. The life skills program aims to give community members practical ways to reduce food scarcity.  14 News
  • Dozens of tri-state veterans will soon travel to Washington, D.C. with Honor Flight of Southern Indiana—its pork chop dinner fundraiser on March 21 will help cover travel costs and gather donations to support the upcoming trip.  44 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Farmer and Frenchman in Henderson will soon begin their expansion to add six bed and breakfast units to meet high customer demand. The owners resolved zoning issues (now allowing up to nine overnight units) and plan to have the new rooms open within the next 18 months.  14 News

CRIME NEWS

  • The Ohio Township Fire Department warns drivers not to run over fire hoses near emergencies, as doing so can cut off the vital water supply and lead to a Class A misdemeanor (under Indiana law), risking delayed response and potential injury to firefighters.  14 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Signature School will open a new middle school at 519 Main Street in downtown Evansville in August 2028. The project begins when the building is vacated in June 2027, with construction set to take 14 months and a goal of raising $6 million, according to executive director Jean Hitchcock.  Courier & Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The EPA will hold two public sessions next week to update residents on work planned at the Jacobsville Superfund site and answer questions on soil contamination from past industrial activity. The sessions are on March 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at EVPL East at 840 E. Chandler Ave & on March 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at EVPL Central at 200 S.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.  Courier & Press
  • Starting Saturday, INDOT will close lanes on I-64 near Poseyville for work on a future bridge project, and the closures will run through early May.  14 News
  • Evansville Fire Chief Tony Knight said the city switched from its AMR partnership after a study exposed repeated service issues—staffing shortages and slow response times. The new ambulance service will launch on July 1, with eight ambulances arriving by month’s end and more units expected in April.  44 News
  • City officials have updated the METS fare system so riders can now use credit + debit cards and mobile wallet payments along with cash when traveling by bus. The new payment options will make it easier for Evansville commuters to board today.  14 News
  • METS is launching a five-year upgrade with Matawan, letting riders pay with credit cards, debit cards, mobile wallets (and digitized cash) on 21 routes and 29 buses. The new system will set fare limits and allow planned Free Ride Days, aiming to boost equity for Evansville riders.  44 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Evansville's Sheriff's Office received nearly 100 trauma kits from the Central Indiana Police Foundation to improve first responders' emergency care + USI Public Safety also got a dozen kits to strengthen campus safety.  14 News
  • 62-year-old Tammy Schmittler returned to Deaconess Midtown Hospital Thursday to thank the care team for saving her life after surviving a major heart attack last year that left her with less than a 5% chance of survival—she underwent CPR and received a life-saving heart pump.  14 News
