COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Youth Resources will host its 17th annual Big Man On Campus pageant fundraiser at Harrison High School on Thursday, Apr. 9 — doors open at 5:30 p.m. and eight senior contestants will compete in four segments to crown a winner to benefit the Teen Advisory Council.  44 News
  • Evansville firefighters practiced trench rescue techniques Tuesday using trench boxes and trench walls to prevent collapses. The annual drill prepares crews to safely rescue victims from deep holes.  14 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices are soaring with regular unleaded above $4 at local stations and higher diesel raising costs, so business owners—like Ryan Huck of Spankey’s Una Pizza—hope that locals will order in town instead of vacationing.  14 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ivy Tech unveiled Rex the Monarch Lion as its first mascot Tuesday, inspired by Rex Mundi High School (active from 1958 to 1972) and chosen by students and staff in Spring 2024. Rex now represents the campus at future events.  14 News
  • The University of Southern Indiana will host summer camps in June and July for elementary to high school students offering STEM mini-camps, robotics challenges, a liberal arts academy, a public health camp, and athletics clinics for volleyball and basketball with space limited to first-come, first-served registration.  44 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Evansville planted 29 native shade trees along Wabash Ave. at Flags after removing 43 invasive Callery Pear trees with a grant from the Forest Alliance, and they said the trees include Oak & Cypress while about 50 native flowering trees will be added next spring with volunteer help.  14 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A redesigned ramp at I-69 and the Lloyd has reopened with a new traffic signal 10 days ahead of schedule, while Evansville’s west side faces planned 14-day and 30-day closures at Schutte Road and Boehne Camp Road (detours include Middle Mount Vernon Road and Broadway Avenue).  44 News
  • Beginning Tuesday, Apr. 14, INDOT will change traffic patterns at the SR 165 interchange on I-64 in Posey County; one lane will remain open in both directions and the westbound ramp will close with a detour in effect. Work will last through June based on weather.  14 News

  • Bell Oaks Place Assisted Living celebrated its 30th anniversary by hosting a World Health Day community fair in Newburgh, where guests enjoyed vendor booths, wellness resources, a sit and stretch session, fall-prevention tips, and giveaways for residents.  14 News

  • The Evansville Otters will host a preseason open house at Bosse Field on April 12 from noon to 3 p.m. where fans can meet Field Manager Andy McCauley & the new Otterbelles, play yard games, and get 25% off single-game tickets.  Courier & Press
