COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Retired Colonel Donald “Doc” Ballard visited local schools and community groups this week, sharing his Medal of Honor story from Vietnam and urging young leaders to learn from his experiences; the visit, organized by the Evansville Wartime Museum, connected the community with living history + encouraged support for disabled veterans.  44 News
  • The 9th Annual Taco Festival returns on Saturday, Apr. 25 in downtown Evansville, featuring over 15 taco trucks, 40 premium tequilas and live entertainment — a VIP hour begins at noon on Main Street.  14 News
  • The Salvation Army will launch its War on Hunger campaign on Friday, Apr. 17 and Saturday, Apr. 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at six Schnucks locations in Evansville and Newburgh to collect at least 4,000 food items for local food programs (with sites including Lawndale, Lynch Road, and West Side).  44 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three EVSC elementary schools — Oak Hill, Scott and McCutchanville — have been honored for surpassing the 95% pass rate on the IREAD test for third graders, a milestone that highlights the district's ongoing focus on early literacy.  14 News
  • Students from Harper Elementary took a field trip to Amcor today to see how recycled plastic packaging is made from reused materials. Teachers received activity sheets to continue teaching recycling skills in classrooms.  14 News
  • EVPL Oaklyn is renovating its library with a newly painted children's room and updates to restrooms, front entry and adult services areas. The library closed on Monday for phase two and will reopen on Monday, April 27.  14 News
  • Deaconess leaders held a free pre-nursing event at Deaconess Gateway on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to introduce students to healthcare as families signed up for the limited spots.  14 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials approved an extra $2.8 million for the new Audubon Conference Center at Audubon State Park, raising total funding to $16.5 million. The two-story facility—primarily for kids' programs—will include breakout rooms and a separate $3 million access road, with groundbreaking next spring and an opening planned for 2029.  14 News

  • The Deaconess Classic for Women's Health will be held May 11 at Evansville Country Club to raise funds for mammograms & pelvic ultrasound screenings. Participants are invited to wear patriotic golf attire as registration closes May 1.  Courier & Press
