COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Red Cross officials practiced a simulated emergency response drill today to prepare for spring storms in Evansville — the exercise focused on setting up shelters to provide food, medical and mental health support for residents. Executive Director Beth Sweeney said the drill strengthened the team’s readiness for real emergencies.  14 News
  • Vann Park Neighbors host a celebration at Vann Park off Bayard Park Drive by unveiling a new sign at 5:30 p.m. today and holding a ribbon-cutting for a new pavilion around 5:45 p.m.  44 News
  • Evansville families are invited to celebrate Children's Day on April 25 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at Stockwell Park/Parque Latino. Hosted by the public library and local organizations, the free event will offer games, music, and more to connect families to community resources.  Courier & Press
  • Nonprofit McCutchanville Greenway Park & Nature Preserve Inc. broke ground at 10350 Petersburg Road as it begins raising $5 million to turn 60 acres of the former Eagle Valley golf course into a community green space. The group has paid the first installment & plans future payments to complete the project.  Courier & Press

  • RESRG Automotive announced its Evansville plant will close by Dec. 31, 2026, eliminating 266 jobs over five phases starting in June. Affected workers may apply for positions at other company locations.  44 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ivy Tech Evansville raised $34,850 during its fourth annual Ivy Tech Day on April 21, beating its $30,000 goal. The funds (which will support innovative programs and scholarships) will boost local workforce development.  44 News
  • Evansville leaders announced a new partnership among the Evansville Regional Airport, Cops Connecting with Kids & Breeze Airways to upgrade the student trip program to Walt Disney World; the next group of 84 local students will board a direct flight on January 18, 2027.  44 News
  • University of Evansville named its renovated athletics facility the Begle Family Sports Performance Center after a major private gift from Trustee Curt Begle and his wife, Kelley Begle. The center now supports 300 student-athletes with upgraded training, recovery, nutrition, and engagement areas across UE's 17 NCAA Division I programs.  Courier & Press

  • Today, the Department of Workforce Development Rapid response team met with OCU employees on campus following an earlier WARN notice amid financial challenges, allowing only staff to ask questions & complete a survey as no layoff decision has been made yet.  14 News
  • Evansville City Council approved an ordinance today to designate Bellemeade-Bayard Park Neighborhood — the city’s oldest planned subdivision — as a Historic Preservation District. The measure aims to protect historic structures and guide quality new development in the area.  14 News

  • The Evansville Thunderbolts beat the Rail Yard Dawgs 4-1 at Ford Center on Wednesday night as Myles Abbate’s late power play goal gave them a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five semifinal series; the team will try to clinch a spot in the SPHL finals in game four (7 p.m. today).  44 News
