- ➤ After completing its 20th trip to DC, Honor Flight of Southern Indiana brought veterans home where family, friends, and local police warmly greeted them at Evansville Regional Airport Saturday night. The free journey, made possible by donors and dedicated volunteers, helped veterans see the memorials honoring their service. 14 News
- ➤ Habitat for Humanity ReStore celebrated eight years after raising $500K to build six safe, comfortable homes for local families - boosting job creation and supporting affordable home improvements. The milestone reflects strong volunteer work and donor support that has strengthened our community. 14 News
- ➤ VFW Post 2953 on Pollack Avenue hosted a cookout for local fire, EMS and law enforcement personnel on Saturday, May 2 as part of its Day of Service, offering burgers, hot dogs, drinks and dessert to thank first responders. 14 News

- ➤ Evansville Toys & Games reopened its 15,000 sqft location on Saturday at 3820 East Morgan Avenue — the largest toy store in the state. The owners said a section of the property will open next month for movies, trading cards, and comic books. 14 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Oakland City University celebrated the graduation of 180 students (from 44 countries) Saturday, May 2, during its 131st commencement, where five students received the President's Award and two faculty were named Professors of the Year. 14 News
- ➤ The University of Evansville is expanding Latino outreach with mental health programs & culturally competent care under its ChangeLab initiative. The effort includes a workshop at Holy Rosary Catholic Church & grant-funded interpretation services to remove language barriers. Courier & Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Captain Bob Kubota stepped down today as he passed command of historic LST 325 to John Vaughn — the last fully operational World War II landing ship tank in Evansville that also serves as a museum. The ship will begin its next voyage Sept. 19 with tours in Tennessee. 14 News
- ➤ State Road 57 near Buckskin will close for about a month starting May 11 for bridge maintenance work + detour routes include State Road 68, I-69 and State Road 168, and drivers are urged to slow down near work zones. Courier & Press
- ➤ Crews will begin a chip and seal road maintenance project on SR 165 near Poseyville today, closing the segment between SR 66 and SR 68. The two-week project includes an official detour via SR 68 (to SR 69 to SR 66) for local traffic. 14 News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Warrick County Coroner’s Office reported that 2026 — so far — has seen 7 suicides compared to about 10 annually, stressing the need for mental health support in our community. People in need can call the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for help. 14 News

- ➤ The Courier & Press Athlete of the Week contest invites residents to vote for standout sports performances from April 27 to May 2; voting is open until 10 a.m. Friday and is presented by Orthopaedic Associates. Courier & Press
- ➤ The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced the Southwestern Indiana baseball sectional pairings on May 3 at 7 p.m. on IHSAAtv.org + the state tournament is set to start the week of May 27 with matchup updates to follow. Courier & Press
- ➤ The 5K on the Runway ran at the Evansville Wartime Museum on Saturday, May 2, as over 900 participants helped raise funds for the P-47 Foundation, which protects a historic P-47 Thunderbolt. Liberty Federal Credit Union served as the title sponsor, supporting the event’s mission and local heritage. 14 News
- ➤ Sectional pairings for Southwestern Indiana's 2026 IHSAA softball teams were announced on May 3 at 4:00 p.m. CT, setting the stage for sectionals starting May 25. Fans can expect live updates as brackets come out for games at venues including Evansville North + others. Courier & Press

Annual Memorial Day Service
Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center & Cemetery (1800 St. George Road, Evansville) will hold its annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 10 a.m. The service, which is open to everyone, will be conducted by Charles Denby VFW Post #2953, who will lead the ceremony and read aloud the names of every veteran interred at Sunset over the past year.
