COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eastland Mall has chosen the Evansville Police Foundation as May nonprofit of the Month, and the organization will host a community engagement event near Center Court on Saturday, May 30 from noon to 4 p.m.  14 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Plans have been filed to open a Raising Cane’s on the east side at 7221 East Indiana Street (home to Roppongi Japanese Steak and Sushi); the project was filed Wednesday and lacks an announced opening date or clarity if Roppongi will relocate permanently.  14 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. will offer free summer meals under the USDA Summer SUN Meals program for kids 18 and younger at several school sites from May 27 to early July. Adults may purchase meals at some locations & check schedules for specific times.  Courier & Press
  • Statewide tax cuts started this year and have set East Gibson School Corporation to lose over $400K in revenue in three years, straining its budget amid rising fuel and utility costs & prompting officials to consider a future referendum.  14 News
  • Toyota Indiana donated $50,000 to the University of Evansville to buy a vehicle for the Driving Possibilities initiative today, which will boost STEM outreach in Evansville, Gibson County & Princeton. Staff will use the new vehicle to visit schools and industry sites.  Courier & Press
  • The University of Evansville is partnering with Grace College to let high-achieving students apply for early admission into its MSAT and DPT programs after finishing their sophomore year (students must hold a 3.5 GPA). Up to five MSAT and three DPT candidates will be accepted annually.  14 News
  • USI opened its new STEM Discovery Lab today on the first floor of the David L. Rice Library to give K-8 students hands-on science lessons. Funded by a $200K gift from CenterPoint Energy Foundation and a $50K donation from Alcoa Foundation, the lab is set to host over 1,500 students annually.  Courier & Press
  • Six young adults moved into professional roles after graduating from Project SEARCH at Deaconess Gateway Hospital on Thursday — after a 10-month program gave them hands-on training and classroom experience. Officials said they will receive ongoing support as they look for permanent employment.  44 News
  • EVSC administrator BJ Watts was reappointed by Governor Mike Braun for a four-year term, effective June 30, with his service extending until June 2030 (making him the longest serving board member). A USI alum with 23 years as a teacher and coach, Watts currently directs the district's Opt-IN program.  14 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials raised lifeguard starting pay to $15.50 per hour & are providing free certification training at city pools to prepare residents for seasonal roles in Evansville.  14 News
  • Tekoppel Ave remains closed under the Lloyd Expressway as Lloyd4U crews work on an overpass near Tekoppel Elementary School — pedestrians and bicyclists can still use the route, and the road is set to reopen by tomorrow.  14 News
  • Gov. Mike Braun and Mayor Stephanie Terry declared May as Hadi Shriners Funsters Month to recognize the group’s efforts supporting local families with essential pediatric care. Families can visit their downtown headquarters tomorrow for services, and Shrinersfest will take place along the riverfront May 29 and 30.  14 News

    Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center & Cemetery (1800 St. George Road, Evansville) will hold its annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 10 a.m. The service, which is open to everyone, will be conducted by Charles Denby VFW Post #2953, who will lead the ceremony and read aloud the names of every veteran interred at Sunset over the past year.
