  • The Evansville Dust Bowl kicks off today at Bellemeade Park with a free basketball clinic for kids, a skate jam and a pickup game; the week-long event runs until Saturday with local sports contests plus a final high school showcase in honor of Brianye' Copeland.  Courier & Press
  • When baby ducks got stuck in a storm drain after heavy rain, Evansville firefighters from Quint 9, Rescue 1, and Battalion 2—using a net—rescued them and returned the ducklings to their mother.  14 News

  • A local comic book store suffered major losses after a flash flood over the weekend filled the shop with more than a foot of water—destroying nearly 80% of its inventory, including rare comics and vintage arcade machines—and owner Jeff Osborne with daughter Keira now uses a GoFundMe to help with cleanup.  14 News

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, Evansville Police Department and the prosecutor’s office arrested individuals who failed to pay court-ordered child support — Sheriff Noah Robinson said those not in compliance had a 45-day period to resolve their arrears before their names could be publicly listed.  WEHT
  • A shooting early Sunday morning on the 300 block of Taylor Avenue left one person dead and several injured as a party ended — police said witnesses reported shots fired and one person was struck by a vehicle.  WEHT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 300 Indiana students have been awarded up to $40,000 each to support their planned teaching careers through the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship program, officials announced. The record cycle drew 1,091 applicants from 326 high schools and requires recipients to maintain a 3.0 GPA and serve for five years — measures aimed at easing the teacher shortage.  44 News

  • Evansville school sports fans are invited to vote for the Courier and Press Female High School Athlete of the Year until 10 a.m. CT Friday — the contest includes top local athletes and will update the winner later without a physical award.  Courier & Press
  • On Saturday night, Evansville North left fielder Tyler Land redeemed his error by scoring the winning run in the ninth inning to give his team a 2-1 victory over Center Grove in extra innings. The Huskies will face Valparaiso in the state championship game Saturday at Victory Field.  Courier & Press
