ECONOMY NEWS

  • Evansville apartment rents went up 13% from a $960 median last year to $1,080 in August—prices also increased 8% from last month's $1,000 according to Zumper data covering all bedroom sizes.  Courier & Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new pilot program at the Academy for Innovative Studies uses walk-through metal detectors — part of EVSC’s effort to add a layer of security to keep weapons out of classrooms. Administrators will review the results before deciding if they add the detectors to other schools.  44 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Warrick, Spencer and Posey counties and in Kentucky's Henderson and Union counties have issued burn bans to prevent wildfires amid a moderate drought and a recent dry spell that brought just 1.5 inches of rain in Evansville since July 20. Residents must follow strict fire safety rules—no open fires, campfires or burning debris—until the weather improves.  Courier & Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Southbound Burkhardt Road will close for five days for underground utility work starting Monday after rush hour—drivers must use alternate routes to reach East Side shopping centers. The road will reopen Saturday, Sept. 20 weather permitting.  Courier & Press
  • Crews halted traffic on Thursday for 15 to 20 minutes between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. near Lloyd and I-69 to install new overhead signal wires — the northbound Cross Pointe lane closed on Thursday, September 11. Drivers should plan extra travel time today as the work continues.  44 News
  • State Rep. Alex Burton will hold a town hall on rising energy costs Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Potter's Wheel at 333 Jefferson Ave—he will take questions from locals facing higher CenterPoint Energy bills and present his plans to ease the burden.  Courier & Press
