- ➤ Indiana’s 64 nonprofit hospitals spent $24.5 billion in 2022 but directed only 1% to help patients with high bills while earning over $1.8 billion in profits, raising concerns about true community benefit. Gov. Braun signed an executive order in January calling on Health and Human Services to investigate hospital practices & state lawmakers are considering changes to financial assistance policies amid ongoing patient struggles with steep health care costs.
