- ➤ Evansville residents can enjoy free Halloween events all October that include library crafts, costume contests and parties with treat stations at local venues—many events offer activities for both kids and pets. Courier & Press
- ➤ Warrick Humane Society will host a statewide pet adoption event Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 5722 Vann Rd. in Newburgh—lowering fees to $50 for dogs and $25 for cats to help more pets find homes. 44 News
- ➤ On October 18, a No Kings protest will be held in Evansville with a lecture from 10:30 a.m. to noon at EVPL McCollough and a demonstration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the county administration building. Organizers say the protest — part of nationwide efforts — will let people show that power belongs to the people. 44 News
- ➤ Families in Evansville can now reserve a spot at the Salvation Army's holiday Toy Town event, held the week before Christmas—online signups and in-person registration at 1040 N Fulton Ave are available and walk-ins will not be accepted. 44 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Warrick County School Corp announced it would spend $300,000 to install 15 OPENGATE checkpoints at school entrances after recent threats and a backpack gun incident, and Superintendent Abbie Redmon said demonstration videos and safety presentations will be offered once the vendor delivers and installs the equipment—details will be shared later. - ➤ Evansville Water and Sewer Utility announced that sinkhole repairs have led to new road closures at sections of Chestnut and First Streets. The work, which began Monday and will last about five days—providing access to homes and businesses via Cherry Street or an alley—is part of efforts to reopen Riverside Drive later this month. - ➤ Evansville Christian Girls Soccer won their first IHSAA Sectional title on Saturday with a 3+0 win over Pike Central Chargers; key players Peyton Geer and Ellie Schroeder scored all the goals as the team improved to five wins in their last six matches. The team will face Forest Park at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the regional semifinals. 44 News
- ➤ Voters can now choose the Courier & Press high school football Week 8 Player of the Week from standout nominees — including Anderson Aiman with six catches for 127 yards — as votes are accepted until 10 a.m. CT Friday. The poll lets residents review each nominee's performance in Southwestern Indiana high school games. Courier & Press
- ➤ The Evansville area IHSAA girls volleyball sectionals begin this week with various matchups scheduled for different classes. Class 2A games at Sullivan and Tecumseh are set for today at 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.—other games in Classes 4A, 3A and 1A will be played on Oct. 16 and Oct. 18—with updated scores provided all week.
