- ➤ Local organizations in Evansville are preparing for thousands of families to lose SNAP benefits starting Saturday, November 1, after a government shutdown halts payments; food banks and churches that served 9,557 households last month are asking for urgent donations and volunteers—pressure that may worsen as food costs keep rising. - ➤ Schnucks announced that customers raised more than $108K for United Way through its recent Round Up at the Register campaign—donations will support local Midwest chapters working to help families in need. - ➤ Today, Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana hosts its annual Job Spark event at Old National Events Plaza—over 70 businesses offer hands-on career previews to thousands of eighth graders from southwest Indiana and southeast Illinois. - ➤ The EVSC school board approved a two-year contract that raises teacher salaries from $46,500 to $47,000 and from $90,200 to $90,700 while also finalizing deals for bus, maintenance, and administrative staff; board members said the agreements show staff are valued amid tight funding. The new contracts were approved on Monday amid challenges that require tough choices—employees now see their work recognized. Courier & Press
- ➤ EVSC approved the 2026-27 school calendar on Monday and made changes from last year. The public calendar available online starts with teacher meetings on August 6 & 7, includes student soft start days on August 10 and 11 plus staff development days on October 28, January 4 and March 17, and ends with high school commencements on May 26-28. - ➤ Local food relief groups are preparing for a surge in need as thousands of households risk losing SNAP benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown; city officials and partners (over 9,000 households in our area depend on SNAP) are planning to secure emergency funds and support food programs. Local agencies are meeting with officials, including Mayor Stephanie Terry, to find ways to help those affected. 14 News

- ➤ The Evansville Thunderbolts hosted Education Day Tuesday morning at the Ford Center where nearly 7,000 fans (mostly students) watched the team lose 6 to 2 to the Huntsville Havoc. The game featured educational booths, and the Thunderbolts will host their next home game against the Peoria Rivermen on Friday, October 31. 44 News
- ➤ Stephan Mullen stepped down as the Bosse High School football coach after five seasons due to back-to-back winless records. He will remain as a teacher + wrestling coach while the school prepares for a new leader, with the move to be confirmed at the next board meeting. Courier & Press
