COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Gibson County Animal Services shelter in Princeton is housing 76 dogs and 118 cats when it was built for just 16 dogs and 22 cats—officials are asking locals to foster or adopt the animals for free as they will not accept any surrenders or strays.  14 News
  • 10-8 Café in Evansville—known for its community support—is offering free kids meals to families enrolled in SNAP as cuts to food stamps raise concerns about hunger. The restaurant is working with local groups to deliver bulk foods to schools and shelters until government benefits are restored.  14 News
  • The Vanderburgh Humane Society will host its Pet Pictures With Santa event at Washington Square Mall on November 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on November 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—attendees pay $30 for two digital photos and may add $5 4x6 prints—with all proceeds supporting animal care.  44 News
  • Volunteers began Saturday morning setting up nearly 100 festive light displays for the 32nd Annual Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights drive-through in Evansville — the event will open on Thanksgiving Day and run through New Year's Day.  14 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nine local high school marching bands qualified in a semistate round on a recent Saturday and will compete in the ISSMA state finals on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis (Classes A to D).  Courier & Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the IHSAA state cross country championship held yesterday at LaVern Gibson Championship Course, three Evansville-area runners finished in the top twenty—Reitz’s Carter Zieren took sixth, Princeton senior Mallory Watt finished 14th, and Southridge’s Maddie Graber placed 18th. The only local team, Barr-Reeve, competed too and finished 24th with 171 points.  Courier & Press
