About this event

Through an examination of the concept of "Empathy" as a feminine trait in the genre known as the "female gothic," this talk will explore 19th-century author Elizabeth Gaskell's use of empathy and how that continues throughout the centuries to twenty-first-century female gothic fiction. Writers such as Isabel Cañas, Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Holly Black all take the early genre of the gothic and remake it for contemporary audiences. Through post-colonialism and post-feminism in the female Gothic, these authors script characters who express Empathy for the abject and the Othered, like Gaskell before them.
