The Book Broker on Covert Avenue has closed indefinitely after more than 50 years

The Book Broker has been an Evansville fixture since 1975

  1. 1975The opens in one form or another.
  2. 1998The shop settles into a converted furniture store at 2717 Covert Ave.
  3. Nov. 1A Facebook post says the store is closed for now.

If you ever biked to the for comics, this one stings. The South Side shop has closed indefinitely after more than 50 years. Teresa Stillabower, wife of owner Tom Stillabower, wrote on the store's Facebook page that he has been ill and is the "backbone and brains" of the place.

She wrote that he "still can not speak or hold a pen," and that "legal and financial problems" forced the store to close for now. An earlier post said it was closing for good, but that post has been removed.

  • Sells: books, music, comics, trading cards, games, sports memorabilia
  • Reopening: no date or timeframe given
  • Once doubled as a video rental store

The closing post drew more than 800 comments

It covered a proposed that would require heavier industrial zoning and special approval for data centers. Officials said no specific property is set to be rezoned. The ordinance comes after Alcoa unveiled Project Alloy, and commissioners will consider it at their regular meeting the following Monday. Eyewitness NewsWFIE 14 News
